Regions, Cities and Languages The most popular region to start is of course Ankh-Morpork. This city holds lots of options to start, but if you consider becoming a Samurai, Ninja or to join one of the Djelian wizard orders, a different starting point may be the right one. Albeit traveling is easy on the disc, language problems can occure if you start in the wrong city. So lets start with the languages.
Of course one can learn a different or all of the languages, but it is a hard and time consuming process. You can learn the basics in different language institutes but everythings else can only be achieved by doing (reading, listening to NPCs) for tms. Ankh-Morpork Lots of oppertunities in AM for all guilds and an easy point to start. Lots of quests, NPCs to kill and loot and the city with the famed Thieve's Guild, which allow you to steal and shoplift legally within the city. All others, keep their fingers in their pockets, unlicensed theft is severly punished. It's also a good point to start a witch, albeit Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are located in the Ramtops because Gennie Applebottom will provide you with a Taliswoman which allows you to travel until you manage to handle a broom Guilds in AM
Bes Pelargic Famous City in the Agatean Empire which also holds a lot of oppertunities for young characters. It isn't to hard to make enough money to start, kill, loot, steal and shoplift isn't too hard either. Guilds in Bes Pelargic:
Djelibeybi Djb is no easy point to start. Killing and stealing will earn you a bad reputation with the priests and they will throw you in the savannah. It isn't hard to find back, but the savannah holds some danger for a new player. Guilds in Djb:
Sto Plains The major city is Sto Lat and it isn't a bad place to start. It's a 5 minutes walk to Ankh-Morpork and the city itself is famed for jewels and gems. Guilds in Sto Lat
Ramtops There are a lot of smaller villages in the Ramtops. Nothing is really easy to reach and the roads are dangerous, espacially at night. Bandits, outlaws, wolves and yetis make it a bad place for newbies.
Uberwald Uberwald is propably the most dangerous place to start a character. There are no guilds in Escrow and the Unnamed Town. Vampires roam the street at night and consider a newbie as a mere snack.
If you want to join the Hublandish Barbarians in Winter it's agood coice to start in one of the major cities and ask a taxi (who taxi or who cabbies) to take you there. Most Taxis provide free service for characters below the age of 18hours. Maps and Transportation Carriages and Caravans All towns hold carriage stops (Caravans in the case of Klatch and Ephebe) and you can enter them for free. The major downside is you have to wait until a carriage arrives and it can take you in the wrong direction first. All carriages take a route from a certain point and back. So the carriage in Sto Lat can take you directly to Ankh Morpork or may travel the whole Sto Plains before it takes you back to Ankh Morpork. There is no schedule of any kind at the stops, so you just have to wait. Carriages tend to come and leave while you head for the privy or the kitchen and you'll have to wait again. So Carriages aren't the most popular way to travel. Taxis and Cabbies Taxis and Cabbies are players who created clubs dedicated to transportation. There is a small fee involved (mostly 5 Dollars/journey). Those players are mostly Priests and Wizards with the ability to transport themselves and passengers to distant places. who taxi and who cabbies lists the online members. Send a member which is on duty a tell. Be polite and tell them where you are and the destination. Don't start nagging if there isn't an immediate response. There can be numerous reasons why a player doesn't respond.
Maps
There are lots of maps of the discworld. I prefer Kefka's. His maps cover all cities, most terrains and most buildings. |
